Erykah Badu is a Grammy-winning American R&B, soul, and hip hop singer and songwriter, whose work encompasses elements of jazz. She is best known for her role in the rise of the neo soul sub-genre, and for her eccentric, cerebral musical styling and sense of fashion.

Early in her career, Badu was recognizable for wearing very large and colorful head wraps. For her musical sensibilities, she has often been compared to jazz great Billie Holiday.[1] She was a core member of the Soul guardians, and is also an actress having appeared in a number of films playing a range of supporting roles in movies such as Blues Brothers 2000, The Cider House Rules, and House of D. The B-52s, Funplex Tour 2008

Wed 9 Jul

9pm at Poble Espanyol 45€ Buy tickets

The B-52’s originated as a New Wave rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1976. The B-52’s sound is marked by the vocals and feminine harmonies of Wilson and Pierson, and the generally spoken-word or sprechgesang male vocal counterpoint of Fred Schneider.

The resulting unique “guy vs. gals” vocals, sometimes used in call and response style (as in their songs “Private Idaho” and “Good Stuff”), are a trademark of the band. Presenting as a positive, enthusiastic, slightly wacky party band, the B-52’s have focused on songs telling tall tales (”Rock Lobster”, “Girl from Ipanema Goes to Greenland”), glorifying wild youth (”Love Shack”, “Deadbeat Club”), or celebrating wild romance (”Strobe Light”, “Hot Pants Explosion”), all set to a danceable New Wave beat.

MARC ANTHONY is the most influential artist of his generation. And indeed the most eclectic, becoming not only the biggest selling salsa singer of all time, but a great theater and film actor and a producer as well.

He started writing songs in his teens. In 1991, he teamed up with producer and DJ Little Louie Vega to record When the Night Is Over, a Latin r&b and hip-hop album featuring guest appearances by Tito Puente and Eddie Palmieri. It created such a stir that maestro Puente invited him to be the opening act at a Madison Square Garden concert to celebrate Puente’s 100th album release. That was the start of:

  • Over 10 million albums sold worldwide
  • Awarded over 12 Latin and Standard gold and platinum certifications by the RIAA
  • Has won a total of 16 “Premio Lo Nuestro” Awards in the span of his career. Holding the record of winning the most “Premios Lo Nuestro” Awards of all artists

Hannah Collins exhibition

Until Sun 24 Aug 08

Mon - Sun 10am to 8pm Sat 10am to 10pm at CaixaForum Barcelona (Av. Marquès de Comillas, 6-8) Free admission

The work of Hannah Collins (London, 1956) is a reflection on the passage of time and on human presence. Her works are investigations that reveal an explicit social history, not far removed from news. Though interdisciplinary in nature, her work is based on photography (featuring works that are monumental in scale) and on experimental cinematography (with a film language that verges on the documentary and the staged scene). This exhibition, curated by David Campany, will be opened until the 24th of August. (Taken from http://obrasocial.lacaixa.es/)
