The sculptor Francisco Leiro (born in Cambados, Pontevedra, 1957), presents “Retaule” (Screen) on the façade of the Palau de la Música, a project conceived especially for this building, declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1991. “Retaule” occupies the side of the building, the Petit Palau hall and the foyer.
Leiro’s idea consists of a selection of twelve giant sculptures made in different materials and spread over the glass wall built by Oscar Tusquets, the square and the interior of the building. Harking back to the old ideal of bringing the arts together, the ensemble represents a a modern-day version of a baroque screen, in which Biblical episodes are replaced by a series of unexpected characters, hybrids created out of a memory which merges the archaic, the legendary and the everyday.
