SITGES International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia is the number one fantasy film festival in the world and represents, at the same time, the cultural expression with the most media impact in Catalonia. With a solid experience, the Sitges Festival is a stimulating universe of encounters, exhibitions, presentations and screenings of fantasy films from all over the world. The Festival is governed by a Foundation, made up of representatives from the Sitges Town Council, the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalonia’s autonomous government) and other institutions, associations and public and private companies.

Mecal Air (cortos, música y barbacoa) is a series of summer outdoor short films, music and barbeque evenings organised by “The International Short Film Festival of Barcelona” called MECAL, and Poble Espanyol.  It takes place on Friday evenings ifrom June to mid-September from 20.00 to 24.00 in the evening on the Baluard Plaça of Poble Espanyol, the Spanish village on Montjuic in Barcelona, where you can enjoy nighttime views of Barcelona. Mecal Air presents  selection of themed short films and music. You can also try the outdoor barbeque and there is a naturally a bar.
Admission is 5 euros or 2 euros if you print and bring this MECAL AIR flyer.  Food/Drink not included in admission price

Vicente Ferrer organization, founded by a former Jesuit priest, has been working for over 50 years to better the condition of the “untouchable” class and other disenfranchised people in India. The foundation is based in Anantapur, a remote region in the Andra Pradesh region, devastated by constant drought. In that region, the most marginalized in Indian society live in the midst of a dry and rocky landscape.  Forty years ago in that rural, abandoned region, Vicente Ferrer dedicated himself to planning the “miracle seed,” as he termed it, giving the farmers their first rupees through microloans. Through these means, the first wells were built, crops were planted and the first businesses started. In 1969, before he received international awards such as the Prince Asturias prize, Ferrer wrote, “I’ve declared war on pain and suffering.” Those words help start a peaceful war that motivated millions of people.

The foundation has developed a colossal organization that today supports 2,278 villages and benefits 2.5 million people. Today, Anantapur has three hospitals, an HIV/AIDS center, and 11 rural clinics, more than 1,180 schools where 100% of the local children are enrolled, 21,000 homes for the poor and 1,000 homes for the disabled.

Niu is a community that supports and helps artists flourish. Going beyond simply hosting exhibitions, concerts and workshops, the space offers creative services to companies and artists alike. Since its creation in 1999, BAFF has offered the best in Asian independent cinema and attracts one of the largest, most enthusiastic audiences in the city of Barcelona. Now in its 12th season, the BAFF is also the Barcelona’s fastest-growing film festival: in the course of the eleven editions held so far, the number of sections and films screened have both increased, while audience figures have gone up from 3,000 to 22,000. The Golden Durian Award will be granted to the best feature film directed by a new talented filmmaker with less than three movies in his credits. Thirteen films from Japan, Korea, China, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam will be competing in the Official Selection

Gandules 08 looks at the theme of interculturality, taking as its starting point an essential film principle: the viewpoint. In the form of fiction, essay and documentary, the films shown during Gandules 08 present works from the West and beyond which deal with two major themes that question the point of view: journeys that lead to another culture and situations of coexisting cultures in a single place.

Gandules 08 extends this year to provide a space for creation, inviting four young film makers to make a short film that dialogue with the programme.  (Taken from www.cccb.org).
