Montjuïc’s Magic Fountain

Always

May -Sep: Thu to Sunday from 9pm - 11pm
Oct- Apr: Fri & Sat from 7pm - 8:30pm.
at Font Màgica - Fonts de Montjuïc (Pl Carles Buïgas, 1-Sants-Montjuïc) Free admission

The Magic Fountain is one of the city’s most important landmarks. Carles Buigas was asked to design it for the International Exhibition of 1929. He had the innovative idea of giving the water movement and adding light, colour and sound.

He created the fountain as if it was a river at the foot of the Palau Nacional with raging waters racing down the mountain to reach the Magic Fountain before “dying” in the sea on Avinguda Maria Cristina.

Montjuïc’s Magic Fountain has a new show based on cinema music. The light and water of the fountain will “dance” to the rhythm of film soundtracks like ‘Chariots of Fire’, ‘The Godfather’, ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Jungle Book’

Architects of the standing of Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, Josep Lluís Sert and Ricard Bofill were commissioned to produce the designs. (Taken from http://w3.bcn.es)

Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) was one of the best-known artists of his era: creator and proponent of the Art Nouveau style, a pioneer in the use of art in advertising and one of the founding fathers of modern graphic design. His posters and paintings were admired in Paris and imitated all over the world.

Mucha’s art aspires to beauty. His elaborate compositions bring theatrical and allegorical elements into play in order to create a mystical atmosphere closely linked to Symbolist poetry. (Taken from http://obrasocial.lacaixa.es & vr.theatre.ntu.edu.tw)

J. G. Ballard -Autopsy of the New Milennium

Until Sun 2 Nov 08

Tue to Sun from 11am to 8pm / Thu 11 am to 10 pm / Closed on non-holiday at Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona CCCB ( Montalegre, 5)  Mon 4,5€

This exhibition offers an itinerary through Ballard’s creative universe: his times and obsessions, his dissection of the secret keys of the contemporary, the traces of his own life in his fictional body of work, his artistic and literary referents, and his precise, disenchanted intuitions of a future life governed by the concepts of aseptic dystopia and disaster.

Ballard’s work represents an open-ended body of work that still has many revelations in store for his readers and the capacity to throw light on the course of our future. An author with an enormous influence on later generations of creators in all disciplines, from fantasy cinema to industrial music, Ballard is the author, among many other works, of The Empire of the Sun and Crash, adapted for the cinema by Spielberg and David Cronenberg, respectively. ‘Motherhood’, flashes of hope

Until Sun 12 Oct 08

At CaixaForum Centre Social i Cultural (Av Marquès de Comillas, 6-8) Free admission
Mon, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun & Holidays 8am to 8pm /Tue 8am to 10pm / Wed 8am to 11pm

The collection of pictures taken by the reporter Bru Rovira all over the world reflects the tender relationship between mothers and sons.

Everything started in Africa. In the refugee camp of Kuito, in Angola, in the middle of the hunger, and the the horror of a civil war, the photographer Bru Rovira discovered a mother who played with her baby. A flash of tenderness and of hope in the middle of the cruelty.

Bru Rovira, writer of “La Vanguardia and winner of the Ortega Gasset Journalist Prize, was moved by this image. “The mother, who was not more than 15 years old, played with the baby boy, eating him through her kisses, absent to the human drama that surrounded her“.

That was the first image, but not the last one. From that moment, Bru Rovira attempted to pick up this universal feeling which it is the motherhood in all the corners of the world that he visited. (Taken from  http://www.bcn.es).
