Virgin of Merce, the patron of Barcelona. According to the legend, on the night of the 24th of September in 1218, the Virgin of Merce appeared simultaneously to King Jaume I, Saint Pere Nolasc and Saint Ramon de Penyafort. She asked them to set up an order of monks dedicated to save the Christians held prisoners by the Sarracens. It was a time of religious wars.

Centuries later, in 1687, Barcelona suffered a plague of locusts, and the people prayed to the Virgen of Merce. When the plague was over, the City Council named her the patron of Barcelona. After Pope Pius IX declared the Virgen of Merce the patron of the city, Barcelona started to celebrate the festival in September.

Actually “La Merce” is a Festival which concentrates in a few days hundreds of activities such as music, street art, human towers, capgrossos (dwarves with big heads), giants and an entire menagerie of festive animals, acrobatic gathering including jets, balloons and gliders, pyrotechnical music show and more than 500 activities which gives something to appeal to everyone.

Within the framework of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, “Hipnotik Meeting 2008” will be held for the 5th time in 2008, is all about the culture of Hip Hop.

It will include a wide range of activities: workshops, battle of the MCs, Break dance: Crew to crew, Playground Hipnotik, the 3rd video competition; hipnotik aktion, the 3rd photography competition: fotohipnotik, and a graffiti competition.

The night stage will be hosting don’t-miss concerts by Violadores del Verso, Tote King and Falsalarma, and for the first time the meeting includes the biggest break dance battle at international level: the Battle of the Year Ibèrica 08. (Taken from www.cccb.org).

Sants’ Festival 2008

This year, twelve streets are presented to the Streets Decorations Contest. During eight days, from Sunday to Saturday, there will be concerts, activities for the children, dances, sardanas, Havanan, foods, play, baths of foam and a long list of activities:

Mon 25 Aug: the prizes of the contest of decorations of the streets will be delivered and a dance of sardanas will be performed.

Tue 22 Aug: Haze-Colors flamenco-fusion group

Wed 27 Aug: In the morning there will be a great childlike festival and the spectacle of animation Pugeu to the furgo, of the company of animation Vatua l’ Pot. In the afternoon the action of the Correfoc Childlike of the Guspires of Sants and when the night with the Correfoc of the Festa arrive Major of Sants 2008 in charge of the Diables of Sants. In the afternoon, you will be able to enjoy a new action of Pig the Cèlio, the Mut i the Noi of Ferreries that will present its spectacle is Not pot viure!.

Gracia’s Summer Festival

Gràcia’s Festa Major (its big summer festival) seeks to change its image this year. The aim is to make it a more family-friendly, amiable and neighbourly celebration.

For the annual fiesta, a total of fifteen associated squares and streets will be adorned and twelve thematic areas will be distributed over different points of the town of Gràcia. Areas like Les Nits del Claustre (Nights in the Monastery), l’Espai de la Dansa (The Dance Space) and the Tardes Clàssiques (Classic Afternoons) return, and new activities appear.

This is the case of l’Espai Líric (The Lyric Space) at Salle Gràcia School, dedicated to lyrical song and sarsuela, the classic concerts of Vetllades Màgiques (Magic Evenings) at Casa dels Músics, and the gastronomic experience of Tasta Gràcia at Plaça de Manuel Torrent, who will put on tastings, lunches and suppers for the crowds.

Various commemorative activities will mark the Mercè Rodoreda Year. One will be on Carrer d’Igualada, which will celebrate the famous writer both through its decorations and the programmed activities. There will also be a screening of the television series on the Plaça del Diamant and fragments of the works of Mercè Rodoreda will be read.

During the festival, the metro will run all night on 14 and 16 August. For the remaining days there will be a special bus service to and from Plaça de Catalunya. On Friday the 15th, the metro runs till 2 a.m., but the bus service will be reinforced. (Taken from http://w3.bcn.es) More info

San Miguel Mas i Mas Festival

The 6th “San Miguel Mas i Mas Festival” in August, will have 150 concerts in five different locations of Barcelona.

In “La Pedrera” there will be chamber music; in “Jamboree”, jazz; in “Tarantos”, flamenco; and in “Moog”, electronic. In “Teatre Grec” there will be different type of music: jazz, ‘funk’, ‘indie pop’, rock, ‘world music’, flamenco and Catalan folk with bands like Madee, The Unfinish Sympathy and Jaleo Real.

Other important events to mention are Sanjosex y Guillamino (Teatre Grec, 10 Aug), El Guisante Mágico and Mazoni (Teatre Grec, 14 Aug), the Tiki Phantoms and 12Twelve (Teatre Grec, 21 Aug), Albert Guinovart (La Pedrera, Jul), Laia Cagigal (Jamboree, 23 Aug), the spectacle ‘Mmm… Cole Porter!’ (Jamboree, 29 Aug); and the “bailaora” Olga Llorente (Tarantos, three times daily in August).
