Large venues: discovering the city

Although the Mas i Mas Group was originally founded on the idea of providing regular live music in small venues, in early 2000 it felt it necessary to export part of their musical activity to larger venues, in an effort to publicize a host of artists who triumphed in our venues and bring our work to new audiences as well as expand the group’s business to the artistic promotion sector. This was, among others, one of the triggers that lead us to consider an annual festival in the city of Barcelona during the month of August.

The highlight this year will be a free concert in Plaça Reial as a tribute to the Jamboree club which celebrate 50 years of music in 2010. The festival takes place in various venues in Barcelona. The Palau de la Musica chamber music room will host three Latin and jazz concerts daily during the festival. La Pedrera takes part with three classical concerts a day (not on the roof though). Tarantos flamenco bar will have six flamenco sessions a day. And there will be concerts and sessions at Moog, The Auditori, Luz de Gas and Jamboree.

In a exceptional location, close to Hotel Arts, in front of the beach of Barceloneta, you can find the new Opium Mar a playful and multipurposal space that perfectly combines the own advantages of a day-restaurant with the greatest terrace of Barcelona next to the sea, with the concept of leisure that presently offers the restaurant-bar-discotheque for the nights. Opium Mar is the latest luxurious lounge to open along the Barceloneta seafront.  Check out the special theme parties that take place here, and the up-for-it party atmosphere of the regular club nights.  Resident DJs include Gigi El Amoros, Al Muñoz and Frank Morin.

The Flamenco Festival of Ciutat Vella is a chance to enjoy the voices, dances, and guitars of both famous flamenco artists and emerging talents. Virgin of Merce, the patron of Barcelona. According to the legend, on the night of the 24th of September in 1218, the Virgin of Merce appeared simultaneously to King Jaume I, Saint Pere Nolasc and Saint Ramon de Penyafort. She asked them to set up an order of monks dedicated to save the Christians held prisoners by the Sarracens. It was a time of religious wars.

Centuries later, in 1687, Barcelona suffered a plague of locusts, and the people prayed to the Virgen of Merce. When the plague was over, the City Council named her the patron of Barcelona. After Pope Pius IX declared the Virgen of Merce the patron of the city, Barcelona started to celebrate the festival in September.

Actually “La Merce” is a Festival which concentrates in a few days hundreds of activities such as music, street art, human towers, capgrossos (dwarves with big heads), giants and an entire menagerie of festive animals, acrobatic gathering including jets, balloons and gliders, pyrotechnical music show and more than 500 activities which gives something to appeal to everyone.
