9pm at Mercat de les Flors (Lleida, 59)  22€  Buy tickets

Akram Khan cultivates the art of the encounter, in search of an identity that goes through all borders from a dance energetic and full of personal stories that become universal.

This work, carried out with the training of classical ballet of China, supposes a continuation of the eagerness for Khan to combine different traditional dances with the goal to create a new vocabulary and original in this field. In “bahok”, a word Bengali that means “carriers”, dancers coming from different cultures, traditions and origins (Chinese, Koreans, Indians, South Africans and Catalans) show the updated version of the tower of Babel.

Akram Khan is one of the most prestigious choreographers of the international scene and one of the more distinguished dancers of his generation, famous for his intercultural and interdisciplinary collaborations and to challenge the conventional ideas about the traditional forms of dance.

The National Ballet of China - NBC, headquartered in Beijing, was founded on December 31, 1959, and is the only national ballet troupe of the country. Master Peter Gushev from the former Soviet Union laid a solid foundation of classical ballet for the NBC.

NBC has produced Chinese ballets, Western ballets, modern ballets, as well as modern dances. Many NBC dancers have won gold, silver and bronze medals at various international ballet competitions. (Taken from www.mercatflors.org & www.wikipedia.org)

The National Day of Catalonia

Thu 11 Sep 08

The Arc de Triomf, gate of entry to the Ciutadella.

The first act passed by the Parliament when it was created in 1980 declared September 11th as the Catalan National Day in the following terms: “(…) In times of struggle, the Catalan people used to mark a special day, the eleventh of September, as the National Day of Catalonia. A special day which, while representing the painful memories of the loss of liberties, on the eleventh of September 1714, and an attitude of struggle and active resistance to oppression, also embodied the hope of total recovery of its nationhood.

Catalonians celebrate their National Day with concerts, demonstrations and parades throughout Barcelona and hanging red-and-yellow striped Catalonian flags from their balconies. In the “Parque de la Ciudadela”, organisations and political parties make floral offerings to the monuments of Rafael Casanova and Josep Moragues. After that several artistic performances are offered to the public. (Taken from www.gencat.net).

Her work is also known for infusing humor with sadness. Male-female interaction is a theme found throughout her work, which has been an inspiration for-and reached a wider audience through-the movie Talk to Her, directed by Pedro Almodóvar. Her pieces are constructed of short units of dialogue and action, often of a surreal nature.
